Botswana’s Foreign Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi launched her bid to contest for the African Union Commission chair, pledging to work for the sustainable transformation of the continent if elected in polls set for June.Briefing journalists in the capital Gaborone, Venson-Moitoi said she has faith in the AU and that Botswana “believes in the instrumentality of multilateral organizations” such as the continental body.
“That is the compelling justification of our joining the membership of the OAU as it was back then within just one month of our independence on 31 October 1966,” Venson-Moitoi said.
She described herself as “an agent of the sustainable transformation agenda that is geared towards Africa’s transformation process.”
She noted that she would “unleash her potential” to transform Africa into an effective and influential player in global affairs. “As chairperson of the Commission, I will provide the necessary guidance for programme formulation and prioritization, driving the formulation of the strategic plan of the organization,” the Botswana minister said.
She said a lot has been achieved by the AU although much more still needs to be done.
“Perhaps what is of immediate concern will be the critical issue of the financing of the African Union activities.”
Venson-Moitoi pledged to ensure that the AU becomes self-reliant in terms of implementation of its programmes.
Elections for the AU Commission chairperson are set for the AU summit scheduled for June 17-18 in Rwanda.
