Bertelsmann Foundation, which is based in the Federal Republic of Germany, has released its Management and Status Indices under the rubric of its 2016 Transformation Index Report. The report, which is published on a biannual basis, is intended to provide a comprehensive view of the status of democracy, governance and socially responsible market economics, as well as the overall quality of political management, in 129 countries (excluded pre-1990 OECD members states of western Europe, north America and Japan).
In the Status Index which “ranks the countries according to their quality of democracy and market economy as of January 31, 2015” Botswana achieved 17th position out of 129 countries, just above EU member state Hungary.
In the seperate Management Index, which “ranks the countries according to their leadership’s political management performance between February 2013 and January 2015” Botswana was ranked 9th among the surveyed countries, just above South Korea.The 2016 Management Index’s top ten (with their scores) were: Uraguay (7.56), Chile (7.51), Taiwan (7.48), Estonia (7.40), Poland (7.22), Lithuania (7.19), Latvia (6.97), Slovakia (6.96), Botswana (6.95) and South Korea (6.89)Based on the above the report further goes on to place Botswana in the global top twenty for the “advanced” status of its democracy and economy.
