BOTSWANA TO DIVERSIFY ECONOMY THROUGH COAL TO LIQUIDS PRODUCTS

The Chief Executive Officer of state run Botswana Oil Company Willie Mokgatlhe said Friday that the country is working towards diversifying its economy through coal beneficiation (coal to liquids and associated by-products). Speaking at a press briefing in the capital Gaborone, Mokgatlhe said true security of supply comes with being self-sufficient therefore an opportunity exists for Botswana to exploit her vast coal resource through environmentally friendly technologies.

The Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) through the Department of Energy (DoE) in conjunction with BOL have developed a high-level CTL framework for Botswana, Mokgatlhe said. Therefore, he said the country is looking at promoting investment in infrastructure that includes pipeline and storage facilities (locally and coastal), to increase reliability of supply. He said his company’s mandate, is among others to ensure security of supply of petroleum products supports the country’s economic development such as Mining, Tourism, supports business operations and infrastructure development. “Botswana has limited investment in the petroleum products logistical infrastructure (e.g. storage facilities, pipeline). Annual national consumption of petroleum products is about 1.2 billion litres”, said Makgathe.
