Earlier this morning the Honourable Minister of International Affairs and Co-operation, Dr. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, met with and answered questions from members of the press. The scheduled media briefing focused on updating members of the press on the Minister’s ongoing campaign for the position of African Union Chair.
During the briefing Minister Venson-Motoi confirmed that her candidacy for the AU position had been re-endorsed by SADC Heads of State and Government at their recent Summit in Swaziland.
The Minister further reported that she had subsequently had the opportunity to discuss her candidacy with other regional Ministers of International or Foreign Affairs in Pretoria. During these discussions there was general consensus that priority areas for the next AU Chair to address should include such burning issues as migration, regional integration, collective security and the need to sustainable and accountable financing of A.U. activities.
Minister Venson-Motoi further reported on her recent visit to New York, where she had accompanied His Honour the Vice President at the United Nations General Assembly debate and various side events. She noted that these had provided further opportunities to engage with regional colleagues on both a bilateral and multilateral basis, as well take part in two well attended campaign programmes, one held at the Botswana (Pula House) and Angola Missions.
The later event, chaired by Tanzania, was convened to underscore SADC sponsorship and support for her candidacy.
